How the league works
Objective scoring, mystery scout visits, a real season.
What it is
Season 1 is 24 founding NYC cocktail bars split into three borough divisions. Trained scouts run mystery visits during off-peak hours, order off the menu, and score every visit on a blind, weighted rubric. Seasons run twice a year.
It exists because bar rankings are usually opinion columns dressed up as awards, and the awards themselves are opaque. This is a real ladder, run like a sports league. Same rules for everyone. Scores you can see. A season that actually ends with a champion.
The match visit

The scout walks in as a normal guest and waits to be greeted like anyone else.

At the door the scout announces themselves: “I'm a scout for the Cocktail Bar League. You've drawn a match visit today. No rush, pick your rep, let me know when you're ready, and we'll start the clock together.”

If the bar wants proof, the scout offers a digital credential by QR code.

The bar picks its rep and signals when it's ready.

The scout orders three drinks, one from each of three randomly generated categories, all off the bar's own menu.

The clock starts on the last order confirmation and stays invisible to the bar.

The scout scores the drinks, the hospitality, the decor, and the speed.
The scoring formula
Visit Score = 60% drinks + 15% hospitality + 10% decor + 10% speed-adjusted + 5% Google review score
Season Score = average of all visits (minimum 2 per season)
Every element is scored on a 0-10 NPS-style scale. Those scores are weighted into a single visit score, and the visit scores are averaged across the season. No single bad night sinks a bar, and no single great night carries one.
Eligibility
- Located in Manhattan, Brooklyn, or Queens
- Has a published cocktail menu (curated drinks, not just a list of spirits)
- Open at least 12 months
- 100+ Google reviews at 4.3+ average
- Willing to be visited during off-peak hours by trained scouts
The season
Two seasons a year, aligned to menu cycles: Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter. Bars compete inside their borough division through the regular season.
The top bars in each borough make the playoffs. Playoffs lead to a borough finals, and the finals crown a champion. Then the menus turn over and everyone runs it back.
